Asia

Asia is the largest continent in the world by both land area and population. It covers an area of more than 44 million square kilometres, about 30% of Earth's total land area and 8% of Earth's total surface area.

Asia is divided into five main regions: East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and West Asia (Middle East). Examples of countries within these regions include China and Japan (East Asia), India and Pakistan (South Asia), Indonesia and Thailand (Southeast Asia), Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan (Central Asia), and Saudi Arabia and Iran (West Asia). The specific countries included in each region can vary slightly based on different classifications.

East Asia: China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan.

South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.

Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

West Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Important notes:

Transcontinental countries: Some countries, like Russia, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, are considered transcontinental and are located on the border between Europe and Asia.

Synonyms: West Asia is also commonly referred to as the Middle East.

Political and cultural considerations: Some sources classify countries like Armenia and Cyprus as culturally and politically part of Europe, even though they are geographically in Asia.
